Automobile Liability Additional Insured Endorsement (CA 83 07 03 23)

Provides additional insured coverage for automobile liability.

What Does This Coverage Include?

  • Modifies the Business Auto/Commercial Auto policy to address contract-driven risk transfer requirements—particularly Additional Insured status, primary and noncontributory wording, and waiver of subrogation.
  • Adds **Additional Insured** coverage so a client, project owner, or other required party can be protected for covered auto liability arising from your use of insured vehicles in connection with the agreement.
  • Helps extend defense and indemnity to the Additional Insured for allegations of vicarious liability tied to your drivers, your operations, or your covered autos—subject to the policy terms and exclusions.
  • Commonly requested when a contract requires evidence that automobile liability coverage supports the risk transfer provisions in the agreement, especially where vehicles are used on or around a project site.

What Is NOT Covered?

  • The following coverages can be included if endorsed elsewhere
  • Primary and noncontributory status: This endorsement does not state that your auto policy applies on a primary and noncontributory basis for the required parties.
  • Waiver of subrogation: This endorsement does not waive the insurer’s rights of recovery against required parties following a covered auto loss.

Why Is This Endorsement Important?

  • Helps satisfy auto-related contract requirements so required parties can be treated as **Additional Insureds** for covered auto liability tied to your use of vehicles.
  • Strengthens risk transfer when an accident triggers allegations against multiple parties—for example, when a site owner is named due to operations involving your vehicle.
  • Clarifies how liability is intended to be shared (or not shared) between parties, which can reduce disputes at claim time.

How Do You Review This Coverage?

  • Ensure that policy number - when printed - matches the COI
  • Ensure that expiration date - when printed - is not yet expired
  • Ensure that no invalidating watermarks (e.g. Sample) are included
  • Ensure the boxes contain full blanket language or the additional insured entities and locations that match your contract.
  • Review any specific limitations or restrictive language.
